OUR TAKE

Affordable 4K streaming in the Amazon and Alexa ecosystem

Here's the case for it, along with the things we'd check before buying.

What makes it worth a look

  • Affordable 4K streaming in the Amazon and Alexa ecosystem

What to check first

  • Vega OS is not Android-based Fire OS, so do not assume Android APK or older Fire OS sideloading guidance applies. It also has 1GB RAM, 8GB storage and no Dolby Vision.
  • 8GB storage can become restrictive once apps and updates accumulate
  • No built-in Ethernet port, so wired networking needs another route
  • No Dolby Vision support

Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Select is the value-focused 4K model in the current Fire TV range. It runs Vega OS 1.1 rather than the Android-based Fire OS used by models such as the Fire TV Stick 4K Plus and 4K Max. Amazon lists 1GB RAM, 8GB storage, dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi, HDR10/HDR10+/HLG support and Dolby Atmos pass-through.

That makes it a straightforward choice for low-cost mainstream 4K streaming in the Amazon and Alexa ecosystem, but it is not the right model to buy on the assumption that Android APK or older Fire OS sideloading guidance will carry over. It also omits Dolby Vision and has less memory than the higher-end Fire TV sticks.
