Fire TV remains a credible choice. This guide is for people who specifically want a different interface, more storage, built-in Ethernet, Google TV or UK live television through Freely.
1. Xiaomi TV Box S (3rd Gen) — best value alternative
Our default alternative for buyers who want Google TV and more internal storage. Xiaomi specifies 32GB storage, Wi-Fi 6, 4K/60, Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and a USB 2.0 port. The main thing Fire TV 4K Max still does better on paper is Wi-Fi 6E; Xiaomi also lacks built-in Ethernet.
2. STRONG LEAP NOVA UK — best compact 32GB alternative
This is the most interesting direct stick-format alternative in our current shortlist. STRONG lists Google TV, Android 14, 32GB storage, Wi-Fi 6, Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and AV1 support. It gives you twice the nominal storage of the Fire TV Stick 4K Max while staying compact.
3. Google TV Streamer (4K) — best premium alternative
Google’s own streamer is the obvious move if you want a premium Google TV box rather than a stick. It provides 4GB RAM, 32GB storage, built-in 1Gbps Ethernet, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, plus Matter and Thread smart-home support.
4. Manhattan Aero — best if UK live TV is the reason you are switching
Aero solves a different problem. Freely brings UK live TV and catch-up over broadband without an aerial or dish, while TiVo OS handles mainstream streaming apps. Aero also includes Wi-Fi 6 and Ethernet. It does not support Dolby Vision and is not intended for Android-style sideloading.
5. Xiaomi TV Stick 4K (2nd Gen) — best simple Google TV stick
The closest simple form-factor swap if you want to leave Fire TV for Google TV. It supports 4K, Wi-Fi 6, Dolby Vision and HDR10+, but the 8GB storage is a clear downgrade from Fire TV 4K Max’s 16GB.
Reasons not to switch
If you already like Alexa, own other Amazon devices and are happy with the Fire TV interface, switching platforms can create work without creating much benefit. The 4K Max remains competitive on storage, wireless networking and HDR support. We would change only for a concrete reason such as Google TV, 32GB storage, built-in Ethernet or Freely.
