UK GUIDE · UPDATED AUGUST 2026
Searches for a Freely recorder box have grown quickly as more UK viewers move towards broadband-delivered TV. The confusing part is that a box can support Freely and still only record channels received through an aerial.
Can you record Freely TV?
No — Freely’s internet-streamed live channels cannot currently be recorded. Freely’s own support guidance says the platform is built around live streaming and catch-up rather than local recording. Some TVs and boxes can still record terrestrial broadcast channels if they include a tuner and you connect an aerial.
That distinction matters: Freely streaming and TV recording are not the same signal path.
Best options if you want Freely and recording
1. Humax Aura EZ — the closest thing to a Freely recorder box
Humax Aura EZ combines Freely with a built-in terrestrial TV recorder. With an aerial connected, Humax says it can record up to four DTT channels at once while you watch another, with storage options designed for large recording libraries.
The important limitation is that it does not record Freely IP channels. Humax explicitly separates terrestrial DTT channels, which can be recorded, from Freely internet channels, which cannot.
That makes Aura EZ the strongest single-box option if you want Freely on the same device as traditional recording and you are happy to connect an aerial.
2. Manhattan Aero + a separate recorder
Manhattan Aero is a Freely streamer rather than a recorder. Manhattan confirms that Aero cannot record live Freely channels. If you want recording as well, Manhattan recommends pairing Aero with a separate Freeview or Freesat recorder.
This is less tidy than one hybrid box, but it can make sense if you specifically want Freely over broadband while keeping proper series recording from an aerial or dish.
Can you record Freely without an aerial?
Not in the traditional local-recording sense. If you use Freely entirely over broadband, you rely on live streaming, restart and broadcaster catch-up where available rather than saving the live stream to a hard drive.
If aerial-free viewing is your priority, see our Manhattan Aero review. If recording is the priority, an aerial-fed recorder remains the practical route.
Why can’t Freely streamed channels be recorded?
Freely and Manhattan both explain that the streamed channels are delivered over the internet and broadcasters do not permit those streams to be recorded locally. This is a platform/content-rights limitation rather than a missing feature on one particular box.
Freely recorder box: what should you buy?
- Choose Humax Aura EZ if you want Freely and traditional recording in one box and can use an aerial.
- Choose Manhattan Aero if you want Freely without an aerial and do not need local recording.
- Use a separate Freeview/Freesat recorder if full series recording, pause and rewind are more important than having everything in one interface.
